Why roof detailing is important

A roof is a system rather than just a collection of tiles. The outer covering, underlay, drainage, structural support and weathering details must work together. Faults often occur where two elements meet — particularly at valleys, chimneys, dormers, rooflights and abutments.

What homeowners should understand

Replacing a visible tile may not resolve water entry where the underlying problem is faulty flashing, damaged underlay or a drainage defect. Likewise, a roof may require better ventilation or condensation control rather than another layer of sealant.

For a practical comparison of different coverings, see types of roof materials.
